You see ads everywhere, right? Farfetch pushing “The RealReal’s Authenticated edit” – fancy talk for “we’re selling used stuff but swearing it’s legit.” And then Selfridges is all, “Designer Bags Sale!” which, let’s be honest, usually means last season’s leftovers nobody wanted the first time around.
Then there’s the whole “classic vs. trendy” thing. Hermès Birkin? Obvi a classic. Gucci GG Marmont? Yeah, okay, still kinda cool. But then they throw in Simon Miller’s Bonsai… I mean, cute, sure, but is it *really* designer? Like, will it still be cool next year? I dunno, I have my doubts.
And don’t even get me started on the Louis Vuitton website. “Creative, elegant, practical…” Yeah, practical if you’re carrying around gold bars, maybe? Some of those bags cost more than my freaking car!
The thing that REALLY gets me, though, is the whole “transitioning from everyday styles to occasionwear options” bit. Like, seriously? My everyday bag is usually stuffed with receipts, half-eaten granola bars, and a lipstick that’s probably older than some of these “designer” bags. Turning *that* into “occasionwear” is gonna require some serious magic. Maybe a black hole or something.
I think the real designer bag game is all about branding. It’s about paying extra to flash a logo. I mean, yeah, the quality *might* be a bit better (emphasis on the *might*), but let’s be real, a well-made, non-designer bag can do the job just as well. Sometimes, I honestly think people just want to show off. And hey, if that’s your thing, go for it! Who am I to judge?
But me? I’m sticking with my slightly-worn, definitely-not-designer, but totally-functional bag for now. It holds my junk, it gets the job done, and it didn’t cost me a month’s rent. Plus, I accidentally spilled coffee on it last week, and I didn’t even cry. Try doing *that* with a Birkin. Just saying…
